BEGINNING OF OUR STORY
The Steel Legs group was created on November 10, 2013, with the initial goal of uniting friends who sought to cycle a few times a week. The idea of bike lanes came later, where the main motivation was to go down Estrada da Graciosa in the Serra do Mar. Without any experience, we intended to leave Campo Mourão and travel most of the bus ride, cycling only the one-way stretch between Curitiba and the Paraná coast. Amid the scarcity of financial resources and having as reference the history of some bike paths that traveled the world, we decided to finally pedal the whole route. In order to prepare for this endeavor, we started by doing short bike lanes. The first of these happened at the carnival of 2016, from then on, two more were held until we started the crossing through Paraná.
Initially we did not intend to cross the state of Paraná, the trip to the west would be just another training just before the expedition to the coast. The initial plan was to travel from Campo Mourão to Cascavel, but halfway through we found that it would be possible to extend the trip and decided to go to Marechal Cândido Rondon. When we arrived at the destination, we altered the route again aiming to know the artificial beach of Entre Rios do Oeste, located by the lake of Itaipu. As a result of these changes, we know the western region of the state better, covering about 600 km.
Soon after this trip, we made the expedition to the coast of Paraná, thus concluding the crossing through the state, totaling about 2000 km.
The initial objective of the coastal cycling route was to go down the Graciosa Road, and finally, it expanded in the desire to know more about the state of Paraná and its beauties. In these adventures we find simplicity and carry only the essentials over skinny ones, so we depend more on people, making new friends and carrying our luggage with many stories.
After the crossing through Paraná, we concluded the Faculty of Environmental Engineering and immediately set off for our new expedition, the Ayni Cycling Path. This trip was just the beginning of the big project we are working on now, “Expanding Worlds”.
In the first trips our dear friend Leonardo accompanied us, but after finishing college, he found other activities, leaving only Luciano and Gustavo in the group.
GREATER DIFFICULTY TO TRAVEL
Despite the simplicity of cycling, cycling tours require planning, companionship, dedication, courage and patience. We sometimes find ourselves in more complicated situations, such as difficulty finding a place to sleep, dealing with little water and food, falling ill on the way or overcoming long climbs, heavy rains and heat. Despite the variables that appear on the route, we note that the greatest difficulty has always been finding the right time to make the trips, so as to reconcile the pedaling with the group members’ commitments.
WHAT WE ACHIEVED WITH TRAVEL
We believe the greatest achievements are tied to our personal growth, where we learn to work through difficulties more smoothly, discover how much we are capable, learn to truly connect with the world and people and that we don’t have to go far to know and live. Now we see that travel is to exist and despite the danger of the roads, the biggest risk is not leaving home.
On the roads we have already traveled, we can see that by using the bicycle as a vehicle it is possible to explore more the places we have passed and to establish closer and more human relations with people. Thus, we recommend cycling to all!
