Conversations, listening to music, and outdoor strolls – professional assistance involves more than routine tasks
“We wanted a different kind of attention because my grandfather was a very intelligent person and desired someone who, besides helping with technical care, could interact with him.” It was from this scenario that actress Mayana Neiva had the mission to find someone who could assist her grandfather, José Neiva Freire. For her family, it was important that the person accompanying him would be someone who could be part of their daily lives, not just a service provider, but a family member.
This type of search has become increasingly common in the healthcare sector, revealing the expansion of this field. According to Jéssica Ramalho, founder of Acuidar, the network hired by Mayana, this enhancement in care services reflects a shift in the perception of the service. “A caregiver is more than someone who is there to bathe and help with feeding; they are a companion who will be with the assisted person for much of their day,” she explains. “Therefore, having people who can offer emotional support and are open to developing a bond with their patient is essential,” she adds.
In the case of the Neiva family, the choice was spot on. Patrícia Barbosa, the caregiver who accompanied the actress’s late grandfather, now stays with the family, assisting her grandmother, Maria Eulália Freire. “She listened to music with him, looked at the sea, and listened to his concerns. Patrícia created a unique partnership with my grandfather; it was an incredibly special job,” Mayana points out.
How to Choose Quality Professionals?
Between 2012 and 2022, there was a 547% increase in the number of elderly caregivers in Brazil, according to data from the General Register of Employed and Unemployed (CAGED). This increase reflects the growing demand for these professionals, mirrored by the expansion of networks in the sector. Acuidar, for instance, has become the largest franchise of specialized caregivers in Latin America, achieving this due to more than 2.6 million services provided.
This growth is accompanied by the constant improvement and assurance of professional quality. “A good caregiver is one who sees the patient as a whole person, going beyond the mere provision of technical services. They understand that each person has a story, emotional and social needs, and dignity that must be respected,” explains Jéssica. “Thus, care is provided that is not limited to routine tasks but includes attention to the mental health and emotional well-being of the patient,” she concludes.
